Each student may have many ideas of what they want to do with their musical education. Some want to perform rock and others classical, some want to teach and others want to learn about music theory and/or music history. It is my job as a music teacher to give them a well-rounded foundation with theory, history, and performance to prepare them for all their dreams and goals without question.
Creating a flexible curriculum for each student or class is the only real way to ensure that students are well-rounded in their musical education. Taking into account development, engagement, and creativity, one must develop pathways to learning for all students, regardless of their background. A solid curriculum will play off student strengths while supporting learning in weaker areas, and it should create positive experiences for the student(s) while still challenging them.
I am always reading new books, taking new classes, and engaging in new learning myself so that I can be positive I am implementing best practices in my teaching per current research in music, the brain, and education. As there are constantly new developments in research, so too are there new developments in materials for my students, and I investigate every new material thoroughly before adding it to the curriculum for any of my students.
